Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and a city that plays host to up to 5.5 international tourists per year. But before planning your trip to Vietnam’s capital, you should check if you need a visa to travel to Hanoi.

On this page, travelers can discover if they need a Hanoi visa to visit the historic city in North Vietnam and if a visa on arrival is available.

They can also find out the requirements to apply for a Vietnam visa and how to submit a simple Hanoi visa application online, removing the need to visit an embassy or consulate in person.

Vietnam is currently launching a pilot e-Visa system for citizens from 80 countries.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Hanoi?

Before starting your trip to Hanoi it’s important to remember that most visitors to Vietnam will require a visa to enter the country.

There are only 25 nationalities who do not need a Vietnam visa to travel to Hanoi from abroad, for stays varying from 14 days to 90 days, depending on nationality. All other nationalities need a Hanoi visa to visit the city, regardless of the length of stay .

More than 80 nationalities, including US, EU and UK citizens, are eligible to apply for the Vietnam tourist visa online. This allows them to quickly and easily obtain an eVisa for travel to Hanoi (Vietnam) within minutes.

The online electronic visa permits stay in Hanoi and other cities in Vietnam for up to 30 days.

A Vietnam online visa application can be completed in just a few minutes as little as 3 days before travel. In most cases, your visa will be approved in just 24 hours.

The traveler will receive the eVisa for Vietnam via email and can then print a copy to present upon arrival at 33 ports of entry to gain faster access to the country.

Is Hanoi Open for Tourists?

Yes, Hanoi is a famously busy city for tourism. It is home to some 8 million people and is also visited by 20 million people from Vietnam and abroad.

Coronavirus entry restrictions for Vietnam in place during the pandemic have now been lifted. Vietnam borders opened to international tourists on March 15, 2022.

Consequently, tourists can now freely travel to Hanoi and the rest of the country to enjoy a vacation. They no longer need to present any health documentation, such as negative PCR tests or vaccine certificates, to travel to Hanoi.

Holders of an approved Hanoi visa simply need to present a copy of their eVisa alongside their passport to gain entry to the city when arriving at a border control point.

Can I Apply for a Visa at Hanoi Airport?

Select nationalities are able to apply for a Hanoi visa on arrival (VOA) at Hanoi airport. However, there are several downsides to this application that mean that most arrivals in Hanoi choose to obtain a Vietnam eVisa before departure.

Those eligible to apply for a Hanoi visa on arrival in the airport are first required to obtain an Pre-Approval letter online. Like the online visa, they then need to print this document to present on arrival at the airport.

However, unlike the eVisa, VOA applicants need to wait in a queue at the Vietnam border to hand in the Pre-Approval Letter and receive a visa stamp in their passport before they can enter the country. The waiting times are often lengthy.

For this reason, most travelers choose to submit a Hanoi visa application online in advance. This will save the time and hassle from having to queue at the Vietnam border for a Hanoi visa on arrival and paying an entry stamp fee. The eVisa allows the holder expedited entry to the country.

How to Apply for a Vietnam Visa Extension in Hanoi

To renew or extend a Vietnam visa in Hanoi, the traveler needs to visit the local immigation office.

The address is as follows:

Hanoi Immigration Office

44-46 Tran Phu

Ba Dinh District

Hanoi

Renewal and extension of a Hanoi visa are slightly different. Extension allows the visa holder an additional 30-day stay with their eVisa without the new need for a stamp.
