Do Minors Need a Visa for Vietnam?

Updated: 02:59 PM - 23 Nov,2024

When planning a trip to Vietnam, parents should know that children do need to have a valid visa to enter the country.

However, there are different rules depending on the age and travel documents of the child.

This page explains the Vietnam visa requirements for families, and how to get a Vietnam visa for children.

Guide to Vietnam Visa for Children

Nationals of 80 eligible countries can easily obtain a VietnamelectronicVisa to visit the country.

Parents from an eligible nation can apply for an eVisa and also get a Vietnam visa for their children.

Citizens of 24 countries are also currently able to travel to Vietnam visa-free. Some of these countries include Chile, Indonesia, Germany, the U.K. and Sweden.

If the traveler is not eligible for a Vietnam eVisa or not exempt from the visa requirement, they must go to an embassy or consulate to apply for a visa instead.

Do Children Need a Visa to Visit Vietnam?

Children must follow the same entry requirements as adults. This means that minors are required to have a visa to visit Vietnam.

The easiest way to get a Vietnam visa for children is through the online eVisa service.

Children with their own passport must have their own individual Vietnam eVisa, while those who are on an adult’s passport can share an application.

When do children not need to apply for a Vietnam eVisa?

Children under 14 years of age, that are included on their parent or guardian’s passport do not need to submit an individual eVisa application.

When completing the application form, the parent should indicate that they will be traveling with a minor who is included on their passport.

Parents who have their child or children included on their passport and who are applying for the online Vietnam visa will be asked to provide a photo of the minor as well as the name and date of birth.

How to Apply for a Vietnam Visa for Children

There are 2 different ways for a minor to apply for a Vietnam visa: online using the eVisa service, or in person at an embassy or consulate.

Below you can find an explanation of the 2 different application methods.

Applying for a Vietnam Visa for a Minor Online

The fastest way to get a Vietnam visa for children is online, through the eVisa service. Providing the child is from an eligible country, they are allowed to apply for an online visa for their trip to Vietnam.

All children who have their own passport need to submit a separate application from their parents. The parents of the child can complete the application on their behalf if they are too young to do so themselves.

The online visa for Vietnam allows travelers to visit the country for tourism purposes, as well as visiting family and studying. It is a single entry visa that grants the holder a 30-day stay from the date of arrival in Vietnam.

Applying for a Vietnam Visa for a Child in Person

If the child traveler does not qualify for a Vietnam eVisa for minors, the parent must go to an embassy or consulate to apply for a visa in person.

If the child is included on the parent’s passport, they do not have to pay a fee. However, if they have their own passport, they must pay for a separate visa.

Vietnam eVisa Requirements for your Child

The Vietnam eVisa requirements for children indicate that the minor must have the following:

  • Valid passport
  • Email address
  • Debit or credit card

The email address is necessary to receive the approved eVisa, and the payment card is needed to pay the processing fee. The parent can make the payment on the child’s behalf, and use their email address if the child does not have their own.

The Vietnam entry requirements for children traveling with their parents are the same as for any foreign national.

If the child is not under their parent’s passport, then, their passport should be valid for a minimum of six months from the date of arrival in the country.

The visa for children to enter Vietnam must be valid. The document must either be included with the accompanying adult’s visa, or linked to the child’s own passport.
